Infant and Toddler Care Guide - Ways to Soothe Your Baby
2020.12.17

Crying is the only way a baby can express discomfort. There are many reasons babies cry, and as new parents care for their baby they gradually learn to read the messages in the crying and tell what is wrong. We've gathered a few effective ways to soothe a baby:
- Soothing baby immediately every time can build bad habits. For crying without reason, you can appropriately ignore it, and a baby who cries a lot may become calmer.
- To effectively calm strong crying, a pacifier seems to be one workable option. We suggest weaning at 3-6 months to avoid difficulty later and to avoid crooked teeth or ear infections.
- Wrap baby snugly in a swaddle to mimic mom's womb and give a strong sense of security. Wash it regularly to avoid odors.
- Rock gently and sing, and let baby suck on their fingers (which satisfies the sucking urge and lets baby self-soothe without anyone's help).
- Use toys or stuffed animals to catch attention; it's best to have two or more in case one is lost.
- Use a bottle with water or an empty bottle. Never fill it with juice or milk, to avoid cavities from long biting.
- Use moderate massage or gentle patting; babies like the feeling of being touched.
- Use music, white noise, or sounds baby likes to calm baby and reduce crying.
- Give a regular warm bath or herbal bath so baby can relax in natural scents and warm water, but be careful about the water temperature.
