Little Ones Are Heading Back to School! How to Choose Odor-Control Socks? Choosing Socks for Kids' Smelly Feet

Although it's summer break, many kindergartens are quietly getting ready for the new term. Sending kids to kindergarten not only reduces the time parents spend watching them, but also lets kids burn off their energy!

Once children start walking, their activity level jumps, and in the heat of summer, a full day of activity and sweat builds up on the soles of their feet and gives them strong foot odor. So let's look at the main causes of kids' smelly feet, and how parents can choose suitable socks for their children.

Sweaty, Damp Feet

The soles have many sweat glands and sweat easily. Besides water and salt, sweat contains lactic acid and urea. In sweaty, damp conditions, foot sweat softens and breaks down keratin on the feet, forming dead skin; bacteria on the feet multiply and feed on it, and together with the urea and lactic acid in sweat, this gives off an odor.

Poor-quality socks or shoes

Sometimes foot odor comes from wearing poor-quality socks, or from shoes that are not breathable and let no air flow, so the odor builds up and causes foot odor.

Now that we know the main causes of foot odor, let's look at how to choose socks to ease the problem of kids' smelly feet.

Choose socks with a high cotton content

Socks with a high cotton content absorb moisture and wick away sweat better than ordinary socks. If socks can't absorb sweat, it piles up on the soles of the feet and becomes a hot spring for bacteria, and when bacteria interact with sweat, foot odor is more likely to occur! So be sure to choose socks with a high cotton content.

But one idea needs clearing up: many socks on the market advertised as pure cotton are not actually 100% cotton. Cotton fiber has poor elasticity, so socks made of 100% cotton would have no stretch and would slip off the feet easily. Most socks contain 60% to 85% cotton, with synthetic fibers (such as polyester, nylon, or elastic fibers like spandex) added to give them stretch or other needed properties, so they stay on the feet.

Choose functional socks with non-slip bottoms

Kids are full of energy, and when running and jumping around, you should of course choose socks with non-slip bottoms. Rubber adds friction with the floor so kids stand more steadily when playing indoors, helping prevent slips and injuries on smooth floors!

The sock cuff should not be too loose or too tight

Choose socks with a cuff that is just right in elasticity, and try to avoid ones that dig into the skin, to prevent poor circulation in kids' legs.

There turns out to be a lot to know when choosing kids' socks. Besides the style of the socks, parents should also check whether they have a high cotton content, antibacterial properties, and a non-slip effect, which reduces kids' foot odor and also helps prevent slips when they run around in socks alone.
