Why Crib Mattresses Matter and How to Choose

Sleep Needs by Age

Babies' sleep needs differ, and getting enough sleep and rest is key to development, which makes the crib mattress very important.
  • 0 - 3 months: about 14 - 17 hours of sleep.
  • 4 - 11 months: about 12 - 15 hours of sleep.
  • 1 - 2 years: about 11 - 14 hours of sleep.
  • 3 - 5 years: about 10 - 13 hours of sleep.

Why Crib Mattresses Matter and How to Choose: Should You Buy One?

Many parents who buy a crib wonder whether they also need a crib mattress. Should you buy one? Our answer is yes! Here is why, from several angles.

  • Without a mattress, a hard base board can harm the spine; and with a regular mattress, quilt, or ordinary towels, there is no suitable elasticity or support, which can create a suffocation risk for babies.
  • An ideal newborn mattress is moderately firm, neither too hard nor too sinking, so that baby's bones can develop well.
  • A mattress made for babies and toddlers is breathable and elastic, which can lower the chance of suffocation-related sudden death when baby rolls over.
  • A comfortable, supportive small crib mattress can give baby quality sleep

How to Choose a Crib Mattress?

A crib mattress is a vital part of baby's sleep environment, providing a comfortable sleep experience and supporting healthy growth and development.

  • High resilience: Babies can't roll over on their own, so when face-down they risk sudden infant death from suffocation if they are on a slow-rebound traditional spring mattress or an overly soft quilt. To lower the risk, we suggest choosing a high-resilience crib mattress that resists sinking or deforming, spreads body pressure to make turning easier, and keeps baby from sinking in, to prevent tragedy.
  • Material safety: A baby's skin is delicate and sensitive, so a crib mattress should use natural, non-toxic materials to ensure baby's safety and health. It should meet safety standards and have no potential hazards.
  • Breathability: Newborns generally run warm. A breathable mattress helps prevent mold and dust mites inside the mattress and helps baby's skin release heat and regulate body temperature, avoiding a sweaty head on the mattress.
  • Easy to clean: Besides sweating and drooling easily, babies often spit up or wet the bed and soil the mattress. Choosing one that is easy to wash or uses stain-resistant fabric helps new parents keep it clean and avoid lingering odors.
  • Firmness: The right mattress gives enough support. Avoiding one that is too soft or too hard reduces adverse effects on baby's body, protects spine and bone development, helps keep baby's posture correct, and prevents posture problems. Firmness is also vital to baby's safety, and the right firmness reduces suffocation risk.
  • Size and fit: The mattress should match the crib size to avoid gaps that create danger

Crib Mattress Materials Compared

  • PU foam: Provides some support and comfort, but may not be breathable enough.
  • Latex foam: Provides good support and elasticity with better breathability, helping keep the mattress fresh.
  • Organic cotton: Skin-friendly and comfortable, but wicks sweat less well and can build up moisture.
  • Cotton: Absorbs water well but may not be breathable enough and can build up moisture.
  • POE: Provides some support and comfort, has excellent breathability, and can be washed with water to stay clean.

Everyday Crib Mattress Care

  • Clean right away: When you find a stain on the mattress, blot it up with a dry cloth right away, then wash it as instructed.
  • Wash regularly: Sanitize weekly. If the mattress is washable, it's more convenient; when drying in the sun, don't place it in direct sunlight.
